Percent of Students Scoring at or Above Standard for Upper Body Aerobic Capacity

Measurement Period: 2018-2019

California Physical Fitness Testing

This score is collected by the California Department of Education (DOE) during their Physical Fitness Testing (PFT) administered during grades 5, 7, and 9.

Fitness Tests

Below is a list of the 6 components of the Physical Fitness Testing. See the individual indicator for a more in-depth explanation of the component criteria. See the DOE glossary here.

Aerobic Capacity

The following information is directly from the Glossary provided by the California Department of Education for Physical Fitness Testing, available here.

The assessment of Aerobic Capacity includes:
  1. The Pacer (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run). This is a multi-stage fitness test set to music, which provides a valid, engaging alternative to the customary distance run. The objective is to run as long as possible back and forth across a 20-meter distance at a specified pace that increases each minute.
  2. One Mile Walk/Run. The objective is to walk and/or run a mile distance at the fastest pace possible.
  3. Walk Test (students 13 and older only). The objective is to walk a one-mile distance as quickly as possible while maintaining a constant walking pace the entire distance. This test is for students ages 13 and older. A formula is used to estimate VO2 max for the student
